Since 2000, The Federal Reserve has compiled statistics called JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover statistics). It's an interesting survey and shows, among others, stats on job openings, hires, fires and quits. The "quit" statistic is interesting since when people quit jobs, presumably it's due to them finding a better one (or retiring which given the current number of baby boomers could be significant).
There has been a lot of talk about technology destroying jobs. This may indeed happen although history shows that jobs and skills evolve. In the 1800's, 75%+ of Americans were farmers. Now it's 1-2%. The recent JOLTs statistics show "job openings" and "quits" at the highest levels since the data series began. Tech may indeed become a job destroyer. But we haven't seen it yet.
