"Sapiens" by Yuval Noah Harari - some fascinating and sad statistics...

Two astounding statistics I read in "Sapiens".


First, each year, Americans spend more on diets than the amount needed to feed all the hungry in the rest of the world.


Second, if you weigh all humans (aka "sapiens") they'd weigh 300mm tons. If you take all domesticated farmyard animals - cows, pigs, sheep and chickens, they'd weigh 700mm tons. This totals 1 billion tons.


And while our Children's books and TV shows focus on wild animals - porcupines and penguins to elephants and whales - unfortunately, their combined weight is less than 100mm tons. That's only 10% of humans and our feeding industry. When my wife and I were in Cambodia, we saw a few "insect markets"... maybe not such a bad idea.
